Purpose. The Advisory Board’s purpose is to fulfill its obligations under §63.2-305 of the Code of Virginia.
Membership. The Advisory Board shall consist of five (5) members who must be residents of the County. Each District Supervisor shall nominate one member to the Advisory Board for confirmation by the Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors shall appoint one of its members to serve on the Advisory Board ex-officio and without the power to vote on matters before the Advisory Board.
Advisory Board member terms shall be four years and terms of the membership shall be staggered. Serving more than half of a term constitutes a full term. No person shall serve more than two (2) consecutive terms. Notwithstanding, a member shall remain as a member, unless otherwise removed, until a successor is named. Any member who misses more than three consecutive regularly scheduled meetings without the permission of the Chair shall forfeit the appointment and a vacancy shall be created. Vacancies shall be filled by appointment by the Board of Supervisors for the unexpired term only. Members shall serve without compensation, but may be reimbursed for expenses necessarily incurred in the performance of Advisory Board business.
Duties of the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board has a duty to the citizens of New Kent County to faithfully represent the social welfare needs of the County, particularly the needs of its most vulnerable citizens. The Advisory Board also has the duty to monitor the formulation and implementation of social services programs in the County. Finally, members have the duty to hold in confidence any information that involves individual cases, personnel matters, or other information covered by the annual confidentiality statement.
Powers of the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board may engage in the following activities in order to fulfill their duties:
- Meet with the County Administrator and Director of the Department of Social Services at least four (4) times a year for the purpose of making recommendations on policy matters concerning the department.
- Assist the County Administrator in the selection and interview process in the hiring of a new Local Director of Social Services
- Make presentations and/or participate in other public relations activities to inform the County’s citizens about available benefits programs or social services.
- To submit to the County Administrator and/or the Board of Supervisors reports the Advisory Board deems appropriate to include but not be limited to concerns or opportunities that may impact current or future social services needs or costs.
Meeting Schedule: meets on the 3rd Wednesday of January, May, July, September and November, at 8:30 a.m. at the Department of Social Services offices located at 12025 Courthouse Circle (Health & Human Services Building), New Kent, Virginia.
