Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills will occur at 10:20 a.m. ShakeOut encourages everyone, everywhere to practice a Drop, Cover, and Hold On earthquake drill for one minute.
Although serious earthquakes are not common in VA, they do happen. Almost everyone remember where they were and what they were doing in 2011 when a 5.8 earthquake struck. Its epicenter was about 35 miles north of Richmond and just south of
Mineral, VA. That earthquake was felt throughout much of the eastern US, even into Canada. More than $300 million in damages occurred including numerous structures throughout Virginia.
