County Administrator Rodney Hathaway is pleased to announce the promotion of Andrea Gardner to Assistant Financial Services Director. Gardner is a New Kent County resident and a New Kent High School graduate, in fact, Gardner began her time at New Kent County as an intern in the Planning Department in September 2002 at the recommendation of her high school guidance counselor. She was promoted to full-time employment as a Planning Technician in September 2004 and in February 2007, she was promoted to Administrative Assistant to the Director of Community Development.
In August 2009, Gardner was hired in the Financial Services Department as the Finance Assistant focusing mainly on utility billing. In July 2011, she was transferred to the Accounts Payable Specialist role and successfully facilitated a smooth transfer of the water billing process from the Financial Services Department to Public Utilities. In that role Gardner independently streamlined the organization’s accounts payable process and worked with other departments to provide training and assistance as needed. In October 2019, Gardner was promoted to Accountant where she specialized in reconciling the County’s capital assets and leases, oversaw the risk management system, reviewed purchase order requests to ensure they comply with the County’s procurement policy, prepared the Popular Annual Financial Report, and performed precise auditing tasks ensuring that financial transactions are accurately represented.
Gardner received her Associate of Arts & Science in May 2009 from Rappahannock Community College. She received a Bachelor of Business with a concentration in Finance from University of Phoenix and she received Virginia Contracting Associate Officer (VCA) Certification from the Virginia Institute of Procurement in 2014.
Gardner enjoys spending time with her family and friends, gardening, trying new recipes and watching documentaries.
