Office Overview











Sheriff's Office

The New Kent Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for the county. 

We do not operate a jail in the County, however, the Henrico County Sheriff's Office has its Regional Jail East facility here in New Kent. 

Below you will find each section of the New Kent Sheriff's Office.

Command Staff

The Command Staff is comprised of the Chief Deputy Joe McLaughlin, Jr., Patrol Lieutenant Chris Hamlet, and Civil Process Lieutenant Charles Gardner.

Patrol

The Patrol Section is comprised of seventeen full, part-time, and auxiliary deputies.  The section is headed by a Lieutenant and supervised by two sergeants.  The section is divided into two road platoons (Platoon A and B).  Each platoon works twelve hour shift and every other weekend.  Patrol deputies handle calls-for-service and enforce state and local criminal and traffic laws.

Investigations

The Investigations Section is comprised of two detectives, and supervised by a sergeant.  The section is charged with investigating all violations of state and local ordinances.  The section also assists other components of the office as needed.

Courts and Civil Process

The Courts and Civil Process Section is comprised of five full and part-time deputies.  The section is headed by a Lieutenant and supervised by a sergeant.  These deputies work during the week with varying reporting times.  These deputies are charged with maintaining the security of the New Kent County Courthouse, transportation of prisoners (from anywhere in the Country), and serving civil papers.  This section also operates the warrant tracking for the Sheriff's Office.

School Resource

The School Resource Unit is comprised of two deputies.  The Unit is headed/supervised by a Lieutenant.  School Resource Deputies provide security for all New Kent County Schools.  The handle complaints and investigations on school property as well as enforcement of state and local ordinances throughout the county.

Administrative/ Records

The Administrative and Records Section is comprised of six full and part-time employees that are responsible for budgeting and finance records, police reports, and daily correspondence for the Sheriff.

Communications

This vital component is comprised of fourteen full and part-time dispatchers.  The Communications Section is headed by a Lieutenant.  The dispatchers are responsible for all communications, both incoming and outgoing, for the office.  

Animal Control

The Animal Control Unit is made up of three full time Animal Control Deputies.  The unit is headed by a Lieutenant and supervised by a Corporal.  The Animal Control Unit is charged with enforcing all state and local ordinances with special attention to those laws relating to animals and maintaining the pound.
