The General District Court has three divisions: traffic, criminal, and civil.

We do not have jury trials. All cases in this court are heard by a Judge. The General District Court holds preliminary hearings in felony cases.

If you are charged with a traffic violation or criminal misdemeanor you will need to contact this office and/or appear in this court.

You may file a civil suit for claims of $15,000.00 or less in this court. You have the right to appeal the decision in General District Court to New Kent Circuit Court.

"The juvenile and domestic relations court handles cases involving delinquents, juveniles accused of traffic violations, abuse and neglect (which includes children in need of services and or supervision), family or household members who have been subjected to abuse, adults accused of child abuse or neglect, abandonment of children, foster care and entrustment agreements, court ordered rehabilitation services, court consent for certain medical treatments, and adults involved in the disputes concerning child custody, visitation, support and parentage."
