WATER CONSERVATION

Do you know that you pay for every drop of water that goes down your drain, whether it’s used wisely or wasted? That is why it is important to practice water conservation.

When you conserve, you also save on other services. When you use less water, you also put less water down your sewer drains, thereby reducing your sewer bill or reducing the burden on your private septic system. When you use less hot water, there is less energy needed to heat that water, thereby reducing your gas or electric bill. By implementing a simple conservation plan, you are helping the environment by easing the burden on water storage, purification, distribution and treatment facilities.

The American Water Works Association estimates that nationwide a typical, single-family home uses 69.3 gallons of water per person per day for indoor purposes. Water is generally used in the following manner:

  • Toilets use 26.7%
  • Clothes washers use 21.7%
  • Showers use 16.8%
  • Faucets use 15.7%
  • Baths use 1.7%
  • Dish washers use 1.4%
  • Other domestic uses represent 2.2%
  • Leaks use 13.7%

The links below offer suggestions on many simple, painless ways to reduce your water consumption without drastically altering your lifestyle.
