How can the Treasurer’s Office be contacted?
By phone at (804) 966-9615, fax at (804) 966-8538 or email at treasurer@co.newkent.state.va.us, mail at PO Box 109, New Kent, VA  23124-0109 or in person at the Treasurer’s Office.  If you are calling in regards to a collections matter, please call (804) 966-9616.

What are the Office Hours?  
Normal business hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Does the Treasurer’s Office hold Delinquent Tax Sales?  
The Treasurer’s Office does not hold tax sales for real estate or personal property.  However, periodically, delinquent real estate auction tax sales are held on the steps of the New Kent County Courthouse. These sales are conducted by the Law Office of James Elliott. The number to Mr. Elliott's office is (757) 898-7000.

Why can’t I use my credit card at the treasurers window?  
You can use your credit card (MasterCard, Visa and Discover)! There is a nominal convenience fee to your credit card when you use it to pay a bill due to New Kent County. When you use your credit card at retail outlets, there is a users' or convenience fee that is paid by the retailer, and is also reflected in the price of the goods that you purchase. Government does not have the ability to arbitrarily increase taxes to pay credit card companies for the use of their cards. Pursuant to the Code of Virginia under Section 2.2-614.1, the Treasurer's Office is required to pass the cost of the convenience to the person using the credit card.

I have received a refund check from the County, but I’m not sure what it is for.  Who do I contact?

Personal Property Taxes

When are Personal Property tax bills due?  
December 5th.

What is the Personal Property tax rate?
To determine the tax on a vehicle is not cut and dry. The tax is based on a rate of $3.75 per $100 of assessed value of the property, minus the Personal Property Tax Relief Act (PPTRA) discount. So for a vehicle assessed at $10,000 and assuming a 55% PPTRA discount rate, the annual tax would be approximately $510.

Is New Kent a prorating locality? 
No.  New Kent will only bill you for the vehicle you owned on January 1. If you have Virginia tags on your vehicle, with New Kent as the Jurisdiction, you will be billed from New Kent County.

Who do I contact if I feel I was billed for the incorrect time period or assessed incorrectly?
The Commissioner of Revenue at (804) 966-9610.

Does New Kent offer payments plans?  
Yes.  The New Kent Treasurer's Office can work out payment plans. However, if you are delinquent, penalty and interest will still accrue. It is your responsibility to make payments in accordanced with the payment agreement. Failure may result in termination of the agreement.

What payment options do I have?  
Cash, check, credit card, debit cards, and Treasurer's Office ONLINE. Convenience fees do apply to credit card payments.

How do I register a new item in the County?  
Contact the Commissioner of Revenue at (804)966-9610, e-mail the Commissioner of Revenue at commissioner@co.new kent.state.va.us or mail a copy of the registration to the Commissioner of Revenue; P.O. Box 99, New Kent, VA 23124.

I paid a dealership to register my vehicle with DMV.  By doing so, was my car registered with New Kent County?  
No. You still need to notify the Commissioner of Revenue.

Are there late fees if I miss a due date?  
YES.  A 10% penalty is imposed if payment is not received by the close of business on the due date of December 5 and, by State law, 10% annual interest is automatically imposed on January 1.  US postmarks MUST be dated on or before the due date of December 5.  (Code Of Virginia Section 58.1-9 and 58.1-3916)

Does my vehicle quality for a high mileage discount?  
If your vehicle has a high amount of mileage, you may apply for a discount on your personal property tax.  An application must be filed with the Commissioner of the Revenue by May 1st and proof of mileage must be provided.  Applications may be obtained by contacting the Commissioner of Revenue at (804) 966-9610.  This form will provide the mileage guidelines.

Real Estate Taxes

When are Real Estate tax bills due?  
December 5.  These bills include only the assessed property value as of January 1st of the given tax year.

What is the Real Estate tax rate?
The 2009 Real Estate Tax Rate is $0.73 per $100 assessed value of the property. The annual real estate tax on a $100,000 home would be $730.

What do I do if I received a bill in error?  
If you have a mortgage company that pays the tax, promptly notify the mortgage company that you received the bill.  If you are a new owner, the bill shows the owner of record as of January 1st.  The bill will not be in your name until the January after the Deed has been recorded.  If you are a seller and received a bill to property that you have sold during the current tax year, please forward it to the new owner or return the bill to our office marked SOLD. You should also check with the closing agent.

Are there late fees if I miss a due date? 
YES. A 10% penalty will be imposed if payment is not received before the close of business on the due date of December 5 and by State law, 10% annual interest is automatically imposed on January 1.  US postmarks MUST be dated on or before the due date.  You should witness the postmarking of payments mailed on or before the due date of December 5. (Code of Virginia Section 58.1-9 and 58.1-3916).

I sold my house and/or land on July 5. Why am I getting a bill?
Real Estate tax bills are set up in the name of the owner as of January 1. You will need to forward the bill to the current owner (please refer to your "Settlement Statement") or contact the closing agent.

Real Estate taxes were paid at closing. Why did I get a bill?
Please reread your "Settlement Statement". Most of the time, taxes are not actually paid to this office at the time of closing.

Do I have to write a separate check for each bill?
No. You may write one check for the total amount being paid.

Supplemental Real Estate Tax Bills


Supplemental assessments are performed by the Commissioner of the Revenue Office throughout the tax year on NEW CONSTRUCTION or ADDITIONS. If you are the current property owner, you are responsible for ensuring that these supplemental taxes are paid.

What is a supplemental tax bill?  
Traditionally, a bill for improvements to the property or new construction on property that previously was assessed with land only.  Supplemental bills are not sent to the mortgage company.  Upon receipt, contact your mortgage company to see if this amount was considered in your escrow account.

Why am I getting another bill? I thought I had already paid real estate taxes.
Real estate tax payments are due December 5 include only the assessed property value as of January 1. Therefore, this separate bill is generated for the additional value of any new construction/addition.

How is this supplemental tax calculated?
Supplemental tax is calculated on the assessed value of the construction/addition over the time period that it existed, not the full year. For example, if an addition was completed in October, the tax would be calculated over three months only (October, November, December). You should have previously received a separate valuation notice from the County Assessor's Office when the supplemental assessment was performed. Why did I get this bill? My mortgage company normally pays the tax.
Mortgage companies request only your regular real estate tax.
