Vehicle License (Decals)

All vehicles normally garaged in New Kent County and operated on public roads are required to obtain a local license. Such license (decal) shall be displayed on the windshield of cars/trucks. It is illegal to operate an unlicensed vehicle on county roads and carries a $100 fine when cited for a violation.

Decals are isued through the mail or at the County Treasurer's Office.

New Kent County does not exchange New Kent decals for the decals of other localities. Under State law, a decal purchased in any Virginia jurisdiction must be honored by other Virginia localities until it expires. Out-of-state decals need to be replaced once someone registers a vehicle in Virginia with the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

When do decals expire? 
New Kent County now issues permanent decals.

I just moved into New Kent County. Will I get a decal in the mail automatically?  
No.  You must notify the Commissioner of Revenue that you have moved into the County.  . New Kent will honor other decals from Virginia jurisdictions until they expire.

I just purchased a new vehicle. Will I get a decal in the mail automatically?  
No.  You must notify the Commissioner of Revenue of your purchase.  New Kent will honor decals from other Virginia jurisdictions until they expire.

I just bought a new vehicle. How do I get a decal?
Mail or bring the registration for the vehicle to the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue. You will then need to visit the Treasurer’s Office to be issued a decal.

I sold a vehicle on July 5. Why am I being charged a vehicle registration fee for the whole year?
New Kent County is NOT a prorating locality. Any vehicle garaged here on January 1 is billed for the entire year.

Other localities are doing away with decals. Will New Kent County do away with decals?
Starting with the 2010 tax year, New Kent is issuing permanent detals at no cost. Decals are no longer required for motorcycles, trailers or camping RVs.
