Directions to the Animal Shelter

Personnel assigned to this unit are Sworn Law Enforcement Officers. All of our Officers receive continual training specific to Animal Control to ensure a high quality of service to our citizens.

The Animal Control Unit operates Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm for calls for service. After hours services are provided in cases deemed as emergencies only. We can be reached by calling the Sheriff’s Office at (804) 966-9500. If you have an actual emergency involving an animal, please call 911.

The Animal Shelter is staffed with a kennel attendant who handles adoptions and assists citizens. Shelter operation hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and is located at 6301 Olivet Church Road.

The Animal Control Unit provides assistance in a wide variety of issues in dealing with domesticated animals. The majority of our time is spent handling stray animals or animals that are creating a nuisance. We do not handle wild animals unless the situation involves exposure with a potentially rabid animal. For wild animal situations you may contact the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Eastern Equine Encephalitis information from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is available at their website.

The Sheriff’s Office primary goal is to provide the highest quality service it can for the citizens of New Kent County. Even if you are unsure of your needs, please call us. We will do whatever we can to satisfy your needs and answer questions.
